Teaching Moment – Elements of Visual Language

NOTES FOR STUDENTS:

Before we begin, please have the following items ready:

– SketchBook or a stack of paper
– Smart Device to document and post work
– Drawing Pencils
– Coloured pencils
– Ruler
– Patience
– 1 Favourite Movies and Favourite scene. Get a screen shot of the most memorable frame of your favourite movie

THEORY:

Elements of Visual Language: Line, Shape, Space, Motion, Tone and Colour Adapted from Pixar in a Box

ACTIVITY:

Part 1 – Notes on Visual Language

Take notes on Visual Language, word-process or make a digital copy of your notes/definitions . Be sure to Identify the following Elements of Visual Language: Line, Shape, Space, Motion, Tone and Colour. Post to your Behance portfolio, include a Header of Elements of Visual Language.

Part 2 – Breaking down a frame your favourite movie/show

On paper quickly sketch out and breakdown the use of Visual Language in an amazing frame of one of your three favourite scenes. Your drawing of the frame should be large enough to present to class (recommended a minimum of 8 X 11 inches – landscape). Using a coloured pencil(s) Identify the following Elements of Visual Language using annotations: Line, Shape, Space, Motion, Tone and Colour. Post to your Behance portfolio.

Part 3 – Sharing your Research

Students are to use the Jamboard (link provided) to share their research. Students are to include the following on their Board:

– Your Name
– The name of the Movie
– Screenshot of your Movie Frame
– Image of your drawing in your sketchbook
– A reflection on the use of the Elements of Visual Language (1-2 paragraphs) in the provided frame
– A breakdown of the use of Visual Language

Be sure to take a screenshot your your Jamboard work and post to Behance portfolio

Breakdown numerous movie shots in Toon Boom Storyboard Pro.
